help, than what I earned by writing for such who
desired it; and giving some instructions in <sic>Lattin</sic>  <corr>Latin</corr>.
whereby I procured my needful subsistance. At the end
of the year the Dean of the Cathedral <persname>M</persname><hi rend="underline"><hi rend="superscript"><persname>r</persname></hi></hi><hi rend="superscript"></hi><persname> Gerner</persname>, desired
me to come and live with him, as Tutor to his Children,
which I accepted of, This Clergyman was a secret but
very sincere friend of the B<hi rend="underline"><hi rend="superscript">rn</hi></hi>, and as by an edict of
the King all meetings, where a Clergyman did not preside
were prohibited, whereby no other People were [?], but
the Brethren of whom it was believed, they had not one
friend among the Clergy, whereas the Pietists had many.
Another edict of the King was likewise <sic>past</sic>  <corr>passed</corr>, that every

in the Country. <persname>Dean Gerner</persname> who knew the meaning

meetings at his house which (after having represent
-ed to him the danger to which he would expose him-
-self) we agreed to, and he openly and firmly main-
