many faithful & seasonable checks
of conscience, & the repeated earnest
reproofs of my dr Father I went on
in vanity, altho' many times so distressed
& condemned
, that when I went to bed,
I kept awake as long as I could, fearing
I should never open my eyes again,
but in never ending misery.
In 1774
various circumstances happened wt
which plainly indicated that the Lord
was hedging my way with thorns. These
led me to more serious inflexion, &
as I began more frequently to attend
at the Brn's Chapel, which I had never
entirely forsaken, the discourses of the
Brn Bochler, Latrobe & Rogers were
brought home with power & with the
demonstration of the Spirit to my heart,
& I thought them particularly addressed
to me. About this time my mind was
impressed with a wish to return to the
Brn but finding myself bound with the
fetters of a worldly engagement I
